Shannon C. Walker, Communications and Fundraising Professional, has diverse experience gained in both corporate and nonprofit organizations. Skilled in development, project management, relationship management, human resources, and marketing, she possesses outstanding interpersonal skills and a passion for elevating the voices of the voiceless. Shannon has committed her life to serving and honoring her family, faith, and community.
Shannon is the former Director of Development for Right Moves for Youth. Prior to that amazing experience, Shannon served as Development Manager for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas, where she focused on stewardship and growing individual and small-to-midsized company charitable support. She was also the organization’s Manager of Fundraising Events, responsible for raising $500,000 annually, representing 24% of the organization’s total revenue. Today Shannon remains connected as a Big Sister (mentor) to an awesome 15-year-old named Eriana. Shannon truly believes that investing in today’s youth is our greatest contribution to the world and our future.
Shannon is a supporter and advocate for the arts. Having served as Membership and Annual Giving Manager at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture, she has firsthand experience connecting people with their passions and empowering them to support others in telling stories through various expressions of art. At the Gantt Center, Shannon was responsible for all communications, targeted appeals, and stewardship of the organization’s 1,000+ members and individual donors.
As Director of Workplace Giving at the Arts & Science Council (ASC), Shannon was able to inspire thousands of Charlotte employees to support, hire, and engage with local talent, venues, and experiences provided by Charlotte’s artists. In this role, Shannon led a team responsible for more than 140 workplace giving campaigns, raising more than $3.6 million for the ASC Annual Fundraising Campaign.
Shannon also worked for noted investment-management company The Vanguard Group as a Project Administrator on Vanguard’s Flagship Select Services team. She managed various projects focused on doing business with ease and supported staff directly servicing high-net-worth investors.
Also during her time at Vanguard, Shannon served on the HR Talent Acquisition Team–College/Diversity Recruiting, Diversity Action Committee for NC office, and helped with the launch of the Vanguard Black Professionals Network (VBPN). One of her greatest accomplishments at Vanguard includes founding and leading Vanguard’s young leaders group called SYNC – Support Your Neighborhood and Community. She offered guidance and insights to Vanguard leaders on how to strengthen their corporate social responsibility strategy and made several impactful community connections as she was also serving on the United Way of Central Carolinas Young Leaders Board.
Before moving back to her beloved hometown, Charlotte, NC, to join the Vanguard team, she was a Relationship Manager for United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. During her 7-year career with United Way, she worked in the areas of corporate fundraising, community building, and marketing/communications.
Shannon earned her BA in Mass Communications/Public Relations at Clark Atlanta University. She also holds a Master of Science Degree in Nonprofit Management from Eastern University in St. Davids, PA. The principles and mottos of both of these illustrious institutions continue to guide Shannon’s continuous pursuit of becoming a leader guided by faith, reason, and justice, and no matter the circumstance, to always find a way or make one!
